Performance and Limitations Task in the ACS

Objective

To determine that the applicant exhibits satisfactory knowledge, risk management, and skills associated with operating an airplane safely within the parameters of its performance capabilities and limitations.

Knowledge

The applicant demonstrates understanding of:

  • Elements related to performance and limitations by explaining the use of charts, tables, and data to determine performance.

  • Factors affecting performance, to include:

    1. Atmospheric conditions

    2. Pilot technique

    3. Airplane configuration

    4. Airport environment

    5. Loading (e.g., center of gravity)

    6. Weight and balance

  • Aerodynamics.

Risk Management

The applicant demonstrates the ability to identify, assess and mitigate risks, encompassing:

  • Inaccurate use of manufacturer’s performance charts, tables, and data.

  • Exceeding airplane limitations.

  • Possible differences between calculated performance and actual performance.

Skills

The applicant demonstrates the ability to:

  • Compute the weight and balance, correct out-of-center of gravity (CG) loading errors and determine if the weight and balance remains within limits during all phases of flight.

  • Utilize the appropriate airplane manufacturer’s approved performance charts, tables, and data.

This website is in the very early stages of development at the moment. While I'm currently working on pulling information from the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge my next goal will be to process information from all the documents referenced in the private pilot’s Airman Certification Standards. So, please come back as I'll regularly be providing you with more and more information.
